“Sometimes, just sometimes, Nice guys do finish first” – Simon Doull during commentary

The decades long wait for New Zealand came to an end yesterday in Southampton when they beat India in a hard fought final and became World Champion in the inaugural championship of Cricket’s oldest format. It was a dream which first dreamed by Late Sir Martin Crowe, then lived by former veteran Brendon McCullum and finally achieved by one of the greatest batsmen of present time, Kane Williamson. It is 1st time when ‘nice guys’ finish 1st in a tournament. This glorious match will be inscribed in golden words in the history of NZ cricket.

“Winning this WTC final is the pinnacle of New Zealand Cricket.” – Kane Williamson, Skipper, New Zealand

On the reserve and last day of WTC final, everyone was expecting a draw as result in favor of either team wasn’t seeming possible. But NZ fiery bowling turned the match in their favor and later by two most experienced guys of the squad, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor made it happen for Black caps. As the Indian batsmen were struggling against NZ fast bowling quartet, entire Indian team collapsed at just 170 runs. That 32 runs lead of NZ in 1st innings proved to be very significant in the match. Thus, NZ needed to make only 139 runs to become 1st ever world test champions. Cool and calm Kane and most experienced Taylor finished the match with an ease by winning 8 wickets and as a result, passed the ‘Ultimate Test.’ New Zealand completely outplayed India in all departments and dominated from the beginning.

A country having 120 first class cricketers and very limited resources triumph over a country having innumerable talented players in domestic circle and abundance of resources. It was a kind of David vs Goliath match. And NZ rose as David because of better utilization of resources. NZ completely deserved to win this battle. India’s wait to win an ICC event since 2013 still continues.

NZ have seen a lot of ups and downs in their 9 decades old cricket history. Late Sir Martin Crowe was the very first role-model in NZ cricket who built the base of NZ cricket. From McCullum’s aggressive hunters to Kane’s calm professionals, NZ cricket has changed a lot in last 1 decade. But one thing always remains common and that is their attitude and sportsmen spirit which makes them so consistent even in hard times. When they lost 2 world cup finals one after other in 2015 and 2019, they didn’t change their attitude and always sticked to basic principles of their game. They are no more underdogs in any tournament. They are the World Champions now!
